Act of service

An act of service is something you do for someone you care about. You don’t do it because you want, need or expect something from them. It’s enough that you care about them and want to make them happy.

When you’re picking up your partner’s socks for the thousandth damn time, or when they forget to do the dishes again, or any of the hundreds of things that get under your skin about living with another human, is it possible to reframe the inconvenience that that causes you as an act of service? Surely that immediate gut punch of deep annoyance isn’t helpful. Try saying instead, “This is something that I do because I love them.”
