Doing things half-assed
I’ve said before “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.”
I heard a counterpoint recently which I love: “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing a half-assed job.”
Sometimes doing something well feels like an insurmountable barrier. And if it’s worth doing, surely doing half of it is still worthwhile. Surely doing 10% is still worthwhile.
If you can’t run a marathon, going for a walk is still better than sitting on your ass. Reading one paragraph a day is better than not reading at all. Cooking one meal a week - or even a month - is better than not cooking at all. Dial down your expectations and things may get easier.
I can think of a dozen ways I fail my own expecations on a regular basis. But I can think of just as many things I do half-assed. Celebrate that instead of beating yourself up. It’s a journey, after all. One inch at a time, right?
