I was watching a show where a man and woman were having an argument. The woman was trying to explain that something which had happened was not a big deal.
Finally, exasperated, the man said “I’m just upset. Okay? Can’t I just be upset?”
I was shocked. I don’t know if I’d ever seen such a clear depiction of a man having an emotion, and that being fine, just something that everyone else would have to accept. He didn’t try to Man Up or deny he felt anything. He didn’t try to solve or minimize the problem. He just wanted to be allowed to feel the way he felt.
It was such a basic, obvious thing which caught me so off guard that it’s stuck with me. I try not to make excuses for my emotions anymore. I try to just let them be.
