How to, or what to?
There’s a difference betwen learning how to and what to.
Learning how to program will take a few months of concentrated study to get pretty good at it. It’ll take longer than that to be a real expert, but a few months is enough to get the really important points down.
Figuring out what to program may take the rest of your life. You can sit and list ideas all day and find that they’re already done, impossible in the against-the-laws-of-physics sense, way beyond your capability, or have been discovered to be bad ideas.
It takes real spiritual fortitude to look at that situation and say “Fuck it, I’m doing it anyway.”
My dad is a programmer and he wrote his own text editor. A text editor! It’s been under active development for most of my life. If I knew where that dedication and resolve came from I would bottle it.
