Something small, that works

There’s a quote I like. I don’t remember where I heard it, unfortunately, or I’d give credit. I also can’t find attribution online, probably because I’ve got the wording wrong, but it’s important so here it is anyway.

Everything that’s big and great started out as something small that worked. Nobody that ever tried to go straight to big and complex has successfully produced something great that worked.

I think about that a lot. I think it’s far too easy to get distracted by the overnight success which actually took many years. It feels appealing to shoot for the moon. We forget that if you actually want to get there, you will have to start small.

The old cliche says that shooting for the moon and missing means you’ll end up among the stars. Unfortunately that optimistically assumes that you even make it off the launch pad.
