A better life

Hoping for a better life, or trying to create it for yourself, sort of implies an ability to see the future. If you can’t fully predict the consequences of your actions, you actually have no idea whether what you’re doing will make things better or worse.

But even if it works, here’s a sobering thought: if you’re not grateful for what you have now, you’re going to go to all the trouble of making things better only to find that you can’t be grateful for that either. You’re going to get there with no experience feeling gratitude. Your mind won’t know how to do it. All it will know is the hope and yearning. You won’t be able to stop feeling it, and it will eat you alive.

Practice the gratitude now. Either way, it’ll pay off.
