Morning routine

Turn off your alarm, then turn off your phone. Get out of bed and stretch. Stretch thoroughly. Get every muscle in your body. Stretch big and wide. Go ahead and take up some extra space. Start showing the day who’s boss.

Make your bed. You’ve used it and now it’s in disarray; take a minute to set it right before moving on. This is a good habit to be in, and this is a good place to start.

Exercise. You’ll be surprised how fit you can get with less than ten minutes of daily exercise. You don’t need a gym or any equipment. Learn about body weight exercises. Start small and work your way up.

Sit quietly and close your eyes. Meditate for ten minutes. You shouldn’t be tempted to fall back asleep if you meditate after you exercise.

Make coffee or tea, if you’re so inclined. It’s worth doing yourself rather than buying it. Read something worth reading. You’ve been wanting to read more, so take a couple of minutes now. Just read a couple of pages.

These things aren’t optional. It’s not an ideal way to start the morning when you have the time. It’s just the way a morning starts.

You wouldn’t leave the house without pants. No matter how late you are, somehow you always find time to put on pants before you leave. The routine is important in the same way. Take the time for yourself.
