Figure it out
Some of the tools and techniques described in Tim Ferriss’ classic book The Four Hour Workweek are no longer available or viable. I was disappointed about that until I heard him describe the situation on a podcast.
He explained that he gets lots of requests to update the book, but he resists. He intended the book to be more about principles than tactics. The particular strategies were useful, but were not exactly the point. The point was to think outside of the normal restrictions that you put on yourself and imagine how you could get what you want if you do things differently.
He went on to say that if you’re going to be an entrepreneur, you have to be able to figure shit out. That’s the cardinal rule. Specific techniques or tactics are of limited value, because in five years the world will just change again and you won’t be able to use them anymore. The real trick is to be able to figure out your own techniques and tactics. The shortest, best answer to the question “How do I get where I want to go?” is “Figure it out.”
Hearing that was empowering and intimidating at the same time.
